Mowing Their Way to Wembley (March 2009)

A group of Bridgwater College Sports Turf students have recently been treated to a guided tour of the facilities at Wembley Stadium, with Head Groundsman Steve Welch. The day was organised as a study trip to enable the students to see first hand how such a top-class sporting facility is managed and maintained.

The day provided students with a great deal of educational information, as well as the motivation required to achieve in their chosen field, as Programme Manager Will Bowden explained "The students have been working on an assignment in Groundsmanship and the idea of the trip was to get them out of the classroom to see how the best sports arena in the world is managed. We want to inspire our students and in the past we have had several graduates employed at Wembley Stadium."

The visit was a great success, with all of the students learning what was needed to help them complete their groundsmanship unit, focusing on marking out pitches, drainage principles, annual maintenance regimes and irrigation techniques. The students were over the moon to be given such an opportunity, as second year student Joe Southcott explained "It was a brilliant day. We got to see all of the equipment and machinery the groundsman uses - he even let us on the pitch! It was amazing."

Steve Welch (Head Groundsman at Wembley) commented "The students were a credit to the College and I was impressed with the number of questions they asked. I would be more than happy to make this an annual visit with Bridgwater College."
