Golf Academy players in national event (May 2009)
Bridgwater College put up a brave performance against some very stiff opposition at the Intercollegiate Golf Tour team national finals at Stonebridge, Meriden, West Midlands.
With more than double the number of entries on the tour in 2009 compared to 2008, Bridgwater College Golf Academy found they were competing in the super league of the college game.
Finishing eighth out of 11 colleges in the gross championship on a team score of 694, they were 11 shots away from third-placed Solihull.
Bridgwater fared better in the handicap event, tying for fourth with Myerscough College on 660.
Bridgwater academy director Ron Macrow said: "The team know they could have done better and area still so critical of their performance during the round, putting unnecessary pressure on themselves, only to realise at the end of the round most of the players were struggling in the face of tough competition."
Bridgwater warmed up for the event by taking the scratch and handicap cups in the Somerset Schools Championship at a rainy and windswept Worlebury.
The team of Matt Kippen, Warren Knight and Alex Clapp pipped Millfield School by a single shot.
In the handicap section they had a three-shot win over Preston School, with Tom Warren, Tom Chinn and Danny Griffiths carrying the Bridgwater flag.
Kippen finished joint third with a score of 72 - two strokes behind Luke Krupa from Millfield.
